THE NEW CRITERION and WAISers

Two WAISers figure prominently in the October issue of The New Criterion . The first is Robert Conquest, who contributes some new poems (poetry being the violon d'Ingres of the well-known Sovietologist). The other is a long and fascinating article on Albania and Kosovo by Stephen Schwartz, who used to live in San Francisco and has since moved to London, He has another home in Sarajevo, which is his base for research on the Balkans. He has come to the US to cover the elections. His article stresses the religious groups in Albania and Kosovo, with special reference to the Albanian Catholics who were were persecuted under the Communist regime. It is unique as a scholarly article on a subject almost unknown. I don't think he mentions Mother Teresa, who I believe in an Albanian, although she has long lived in other parts of the world, notably Calcutta.

Incidentally, we welcome London publisher Mark Hegarty to WAIS. His Wimbledon Publishing Company will publish my book SPAIN: From Monarchy to Civil War, 1931-1936. The Anthem Press imprint specializes in scholarly books on international affairs, and we hope to be in touch with many of its authors.
