The Good Life
"It has been said that the luckiest man is one who has a Japanese wife, a French mistress, a Chinese cook and...(I forget the rest)" Tim Brown fills in the blank: "An English country home, and an American salary!" Is that the good life? Probably Stanley Marcus, who just died, would think so, but what good did he do, except make some extravagantly wealthy and silly people "happy"(?). Many people achieve fame and wealth, but happiness eludes them. That goes for a large percentage of modern writers (including Sinclair Lewis and Hemingway) and artists. Most truly happy people often lead obscure but admirable lives, respected by those who know them. This is not a eulogy of poverty.Ronald Hilton - 2/10/02
