IN MEMORIAM: Alec Guinness

Don Mabry rightly rebukes me for being too sweeping in my condemnation of actors. Actually, my comments have a long perdigree, from Plato through the Puritans, who likewise were too sweeping. The theater has a noble tradition, of which Shakespeare is an exemplar. Unfortunately that tradition has been swamped by Hollywood, with its cult of violence for the sake of violence. That not all is lost is shown by the continuing appeal of Gilbert and Sullivan, delighful, harmless fun. However, I am afraid the battle is being lost. Gresham's law.
