"The Twelve Days of Christmas" and "Jingle Bells"
Some time ago we posted the alleged explanation of "The Twelve Days of Christmas", which Jaqui White sent with a reference to the plight of Catholics in England. I was uneasy about the explanation of this song, since the doctrines involved do not divide Catholics and Protestants. I am therefore grateful to Tony Mahowald for sending me an article in the New York Times (1/4/03) saying just that. The article traces the explanation as a hoax and asserts that, probably of French origin, the song was originally a singing memory game. It ends with the ironical question: "But have you heard about the real meaning of "Jingle Bells"?" Well, I have not. As yet.
