Omaha Beach

David Pike writes: "I must belong to an older generation than that of Alberto Gutierrez, who writes of Omaha Beach as "the scene of the greatest amphibious landing in history." It may surprise him, and others, to know that on D-Day the Americans were in the minority of the Allied forces that landed in Normandy, when they stormed ashore on five separate beachheads. I was in an Allied unit a little after 1945, when I reported to an American captain who reported to a British major, but what you never heard in those days was the strident bombast of today ("We did it virtually alone.") The arrogance that is now so often displayed has destroyed the spirit of NATO, and very soon it will destroy its body too".
