Weapon sales by the US and Russia

From Germany, Max Rodriguez writes: "Mike Sullivan said "I agree that arms dealers from whatever country will sell arms to anyone who'll buy them, and that this has to be curtailed. Russia has just surpassed the US as the leading arms exporter."

But today's International Herald Tribune (9/25/03), page 3, affirms:

"U.S. again leads world in international weapons sales"

Some figures:
USA: 2002, $13.3 billion (45.5% of world sales, $8.6 billion to the developing world)
USA: 2001, $12.1 billion
Russia: 2002, $5 billion to the developing world
France: 2002, $1 billion to the developing world

I found no mention of total sales from Russia and France.

Max Rodriguez asserted that US arms sales surpass those of Russia. Mike Sullivan, who had disputed this, now says "Max is correct for 2002 as all the data I could find confirm his figures. I made my statement from reading an article in the Wall Street Journal that said Russia had recently surpassed the US in foreign military sales.

The only possible indication of this I could find is an article in Pravda that states Russia did $4.3 billion with their large sales of MIGs to both China and India in the first part of 2003. Apparently the US still leads in foreign military sales".
