US: Defense Language Institute

General Robert Gard writes:The Defense Language Institute (DLI) at the Presidio of Monterey, CA, teaches a large number of languages. Most of its students are enlisted personnel who are expected to achieve sufficient competence in the language to be able to monitor and understand military communication and to interrogate prisoners of war. Commissioned officers who join the foreign area studies career field also study a language spoken in their area of specialty. DLI does not teach conference interpretation, although its graduates are often called on to interpret consecutively at a basic level.
