Ed Jajko comments; Cairo was founded in 969 A.D.  RH:  It is true that in 969 Jawhar, commander in chief under the Caliph al.Muizz, laid the foundations of  a capital city for the Fatamid Dynasty and called it El-Cahira  (Cairo).  However, for centuries before that, the capital of northern Egypt had been located near this site, notably Heliopolis, whose modern name dates to Greek times.
