Fabricated Documents: The Spanish Civil War

The question of the authenticity of Plan Z in Chile has led to a discussion of such fabrications. Paul Preston writes:-"After the Zinoviev letter, came the Reichstag fire, and after that came the 'Communist documents' which were alleged to prove that the Partido Comunista de España together with the Socialist Party and the Anarchists, as well as foreign Communists and Socialists, were plotting, at the behest of Comintern leaders, to seize control of the Spanish government through an armed uprising.  Although fabricated, they were used in pro-Franco propaganda, especially in Britain, to justify Franco's uprising on the grounds that the generals had risen only to forestall the Communist take-over. Herbert Southworth's Conspiracy and the Spanish Civil War demolished them in much the same way as Norman Cohn's Warrant for Genocide demolished the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.
