MEXICO: Gulf of Mexico

The argument over Persian/Arabian Gulf prompts Daryl DeBell to write, perhaps not seriously: Isn't it time for the most powerful empire in the world, the American/US empire, to insist by force if necessary, that the so-called Gulf of Mexico be assigned its proper name, the Gulf of America? After all, appearance and respect (as in 'a man of respect') are all that matter in this world.

RH. The proposal is happily ambiguous. For Latin Americans, we are the US. America, American refer to the whole continent.  These silly arguments involve not only pride but also possible economic consequences, including offshore oil rights, which have been the subject of disputes between the US and Mexico.
